Life or Death !!....Baby Luke's future...??
This is further to my previous post (scroll down) on who should decide the future of critically ill babies. Such a case was Baby Charlotte's case..in who's case the courts decided that she should be allowed to die in peace..as opposed to the parents desire that she be allowed to fight for her life.....
Further to that is now the case of Baby Luke who suffers from Edwards syndrome, a rare genetic disorder..and now his mother is fighting for the right to decide his future..to let him live....
These are highly emotive issues..very painful indeed and I for one can't imagine what the parents must be going through..but as I said earlier its a question that can't be decided easily and the loss is huge either ways...and I must admit..I don't know whats right either...
To die with dignity in peace..or to fight as long as possible...
YOU decide.

If a parent goes as far as to FIGHT for life, I say they're willing to take the plunge into caregiving. We have friends who have a daughter (their youngest of 4) that is TOTALLY dependant on them. She's remarkable. Visually, she drools, can't keep her head up if it falls, opens her mouth up very wide when she smiles and can't do anything for herself at all. I'm sure many people look at her and cringe as they think, "Why?"
The truth is this: she is the love of her parents life, along with 2 older brothers and 1 sister. Her oldest brother just took her to her Homecoming dance. She wore a strapless dress and red lipstick ~ beautiful, she looks like her Daddy. She's loves to read, gets straight A's and is an animal activist. Her favorite music is Pink and other popular artists other girls her age are into (she's 16) and cries when she watches a sad movie. When we get a new haircut or a new outfit, she feels pretty, just like we do.
While visiting us after our baby was born, she was so thrilled to hold him (with our help) she almost cried then, too.
To think, if her mother would have aborted or taken her off any life support - she would not exist.
What a thought. What a girl.
My apologies to you both for not answering earlier as I was away and unable to access the net.
One-with-cat : What you have written really makes us understand a parent's point of view; truly life is valuable..'any' life..and HOW can one possibly decide which life is valuable and which isn't ! We can't possibly play God..!!! Strapless dress n red lipstick..:) truly beautiful. I remember when I used to work with children having cerebral palsy, the love that they showered..pure..yes..who are we to decide anything..especially human life..
Michelle - Thank you for letting me know about the book. I will definitely look it up. It is so important to understand everybody's point of view, for surely, nobody's life is left untouched by issues such as these; nothing is as precious as life..human or otherwise !
Hi,I identified with this piece u had written as i went through the same experience with my youngest one (3 yrs old now)..docs said she wouldnt survive her rare heart disorder and we parents had to be unemotional and decide whether to end her life or not..We never gave up on her,Who were we to decide whether to sign the form which would take her life??Hope.faith, grit and sheer love and surrender to the Higher Power saw us through and today she is fine. She has special needs but that makes her all the more special in our small family..she is absolutely touched by the Divine and one can see it..
smiles
