Simplicity...

Where has simplicity in life disappeared...
Happiness was just two new dresses in an year..on birthdays and Diwali...waiting to visit grandparents during summer holidays..and train journeys to little towns in compartments full of friendly strangers...of food shared smilingly with kind strangers..and exchanging life stories..so that strangers were no longer strangers...
Happiness was smiling at cooing babies and being hugged tightly...bedraggled flowers being presented shyly in tightly clenched fists...little cards made so proudly with shiny tinsel proclaming love and adoration..happiness was sharing a hot meal with a noisy family on rainy monsoon days..looking at trees pregnantly heavy with mangoes in the hot summer days..
Happiness was nothing to do with how much money one had or anyone else had..happiness was nothing to do with the size of one's house or car..happiness had nothing to do..how many clothes one had and which brand they were..happiness had nothing to do with worrying about strangers and the teaching of fear....
Why isn't life simple anymore..??!!!
Where have all the simple pleasures gone...??!!

I think a lot of people are just afraid of how their viewed by others. When we're younger the fear comes from not being able to fit in. When we're older, maybe it's just an extention of that same thing. That we want to be percieved in the way we want to come off, whether or not we're really like that at all.

What a game to play! To focus so much on this game's strategy takes away from living! To me, that's what that 'big city living' involved. It seemed like everyone wanted something other than what they had. Oh boy, I could go on and on, but the bottom line is...know yourself...trust yourself...be honest with yourself...seems like a good start, do you agree?

Yes, I do agree with both of you..it is a lot to do with the fear of being perceived in a certain way..of wanting more than what one has..and all the games that people play which takes away from actual living. I smile at people and they look at me strangely as if there is something wrong with me..LOL..but hey this is who I am..and will continue to be so :-).
Huggs to you both !!

Okay Zephyr, you have it right there. It's all about what we're TAUGHT. Not just how we're raised, but what environment we are in, around, etc. etc. The media (as much as I love it at times) is cursed to bringing "idealistic" situation into our heads. From "Ozzy & Harriet" to "The Swan". AND from "Three's Company" to...well, any of the new comedies. It's gotten to the point where media heads realize how unrealistic the shows may be and try to better things by their attempt for "normalcy" (is that how you spell that?) But that's the point....there IS no normal, only who we are as individuals.

Good question. In today's world we can easily get caught up in wanting things that truly do not make us happier, such as; designer clothes, fancy cars, houses that are more than we can afford, etc. I think for some people it is how they define success. They want to feel like they're in a higher social strata. Yes, I am guilty of wanting some of these things but reality quickly sinks in and I do not run out and get into debt trying to live a flamboyant lifestyle to appear to be something that I'm not. I am not ashamed to mention that I buy clothing from resale shops or from clothing stores that have them marked for clearance. When I do buy a new car, it will be well within my budget. I am happy that I do not have bill collectors calling me :).

Thank you Zephyr, Tan , Onewithcat and Rachel..for taking the time and effort to visit and stop by and post your comments. They have been very very insightful and helpful ! It makes me realise that essentially no matter what part of the world the world we belong to..we share the same values as good human beings..and ultimately its upto us..what we decide to do..be strong and not ''buy into'' the materialistic madness that is today's society..!
So ladies.. Cheers and hugs and tons of good luck ! Keep visiting :-)

Pincushion, if you are ever in California, please do email me:
kaveri_patel@hotmail.com. I have been so fortunate to connect to a like-minded soul.

I would take this one step further and say that happiness is like sand, not something you can clutch or hold on to for so long. Peace, however, can be carried for lifetimes...
